Since the opening of The Distillery Winter Village on November 17th, the Christmas season in Toronto has been in full swing! Located in Toronto’s historic Distillery District, the winter village will be open up until December 31st. That leaves you with plenty of time to visit the many Christmas shops in the Christmas market and try out all of the delicious Christmas treats that they have to offer.
I don’t know about you, but whenever I visit the Distillery District during the holiday season, I always get a bit overwhelmed by all of the food options. I often find myself browsing for hours on end, unsure of what exactly it is that I would like to buy. That’s why I’ve made this food guide to hopefully make your visit to The Distillery Winter Village less hectic and direct you to foods and treats that you’d be more interested to try! Here are a some of the best food options at the winter village:
Santa’s BBQ
For more savoury treats, make sure to visit Santa’s BBQ. This shop offers several varieties of sausages along with roasted corn and chestnuts. However, their jumbo soft pretzels may be one of the most sold items. These warm pretzels are the perfect snack for the cold winter weather.
Uncle Betty’s Super Specialty Mini Donuts
If you’re more of a sweet tooth, then check out Uncle Betty’s for delicious mini donuts. The variety is great with flavours such as s’mores, cookies ‘n’ cream, maple bacon, caramel crunch, strawberry shortcake, sprinkle, cinnamon sugar, and good ol’ powdered sugar.
British Candy Shop
If you love candy, make sure to check out the British candy shop for many treats that you can’t find in regular Toronto grocery stores!
Maple Leaf Fudge
For a classic Christmas treat, stop by Maple Leaf Fudge for a wide range of fudge that will surely put you in the Christmas spirit. With several types of fudge, you’ll certainly be tempted to have more than just one flavour.
Eggnog
This Christmas staple can be found at many stands in many variations. My favourite is the spiced eggnog which pairs perfectly with any sweet treat. Just note that some eggnog contains alcohol, so if you don’t want alcohol or are below the legal drinking age (19), be sure to ask first!
The Thirsty Elf
This next option is also for those above the legal drinking age (19). If you want to try another alcoholic beverage, then head over to The Thirsty Elf to try their large selection of mulled wine that will keep you warm during your visit.
Curry Wurst
For a delicious German treat, make sure to visit Curry Wurst. This stand serves a pork sausage with a ketchup and curry condiment that is absolutely tasty.
Turkey Legs
If you’re particularly hungry, then a turkey leg will surely do the trick. These jumbo drumsticks are a popular item at the market since it is cooked to perfection!
La Vraie Poutine du Canada
You can’t go wrong with a Canadian classic like poutine. If you’re looking for a simple dish that will surely fill you up, then go to La Vraie Poutine du Canada for some true Canadian poutine.
Soup & Chili
Some more food items that will keep you warm during your trip to the outdoor market are soup & chili. I would suggest to get this in the evening for the ultimate cozy winter vibes
Stickling’s Bakery
For more German goods, stop by Stickling’s Bakery. This time, you get to try German pastries that are absolutely delicious and will make you feel like you have teleported to the streets of Germany!
Chimney Stax
For a more creative sweet food, try out Chimney Stax. This basked good gets its name from its shape, which is cylindrical and looks like a chimney. Make sure to customize your treat with sprinkles, cinnamon, chocolate, or sugar.
Cacao 70
If you love chocolate, then Cacao 70 is the place for you. With so many chocolate options paired with excellent desserts, you will surely be in chocolate heaven!
Das Kartoffelhaus
For another creative and German snack, head over to Das Kartoffelhaus for fried spiral potatoes on a stick. Offered in a large assortment of flavours, including BBQ and salt and vinegar.
Wafel Bar
Another great sweet food option would be Wafel Bar. Served in paper cones, these waffles are topped with so many sweets such as marshmallows and caramel. Definitely a great pick for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Raclette Hut
One of my favourite hot food items would be the pierogies form Raclette Hut. They are served covered in cheese and are absolutely delicious! This shop also serves rosemary and garlic potatoes that are simply great.
Believe it or not, there are even more options at the winter village that you can choose from. While my list wasn’t exhaustive, I hope it provides you with enough guidance for you to prepare before your trip to the Distillery District.
